Social Media AND TECHNOLOGY
the benefits and dangers for LAW ENFORCEMENT

Avoiding Legal Issues and Career Threatening Missteps

Course Description:

As technology continues to advance, we as law enforcement officers and prosecutors must remain vigilant of both its implications in investigations as well as on our careers. From cells phones to google homes to “smart” devices and more, there is a ton of evidence out there if you know where to look for it.  This 8-hour class covers both the variety of technologies you may encounter during your investigations and prosecutions, including the advancement of AI, as well as the implications it may have in both our personal and professional lives.  During this training class, we will provide you with the important information that you need to know so that you can avoid ending your career before it has really started. The course will cover the varieties of technology that now pervade our daily lives and the uses it may have during investigations, as well as the dangers it poses to our own careers from personal use, discussing both ethical guidelines faced by prosecutors as well as the policies of various law enforcement agencies, and the repercussions some have already faced.

The instructor for this 8-hour training course is the Chief of the Cybercrime Unit at the Broward County State Attorney’s Office, Justin Griffis.  The course is designed to provide a primer on technology for everyone from first responding officers to the detectives/investigators and supervisors managing the case to the attorneys prosecuting the case. The lessons learned here can be vital, as many law enforcement officers are not aware of both the legal implications of their actions on social media, as well as the potential impact that it could possibly have on their career. This class is extremely beneficial to all Assistant State/District Attorneys who may not realize just how far reaching their ethical rules do indeed extend, including to other parties.  During the class, we will discuss many examples of ethical problems that have arisen and that have had profound impacts on the careers of many law enforcement officers and prosecutors from their use of technology.

Course Objectives:

During this one-day training class, students will be provided with a packet that contains a copy of the entire presentation. This packet will include brief overviews of various technologies and their uses, Florida Bar ethical rules, attorney general opinions, as well as examples of various social media policies. The material, guidance and best practices that were discussed during the class. The goal of this training class is to make sure that every student leaves with an increased amount of knowledge about the Florida State Statutes, Federal Law and current Case Law regarding these issues and how the decisions that they make regarding how they use technology will impact their cases and their careers.
