Rick Sessions Bio

Rick retired from both the Broward County Sheriff’s Office (Florida) and the Lauderhill Police Department (Florida).  Throughout his decorated law enforcement career, he received numerous Departmental Commendations, Awards and Citations for his Meritorious Service.  More than any of his own individual accomplishments, the achievements that Rick is the proudest of are all of the fellow officers through the years who he has helped to reach their own individual personal and professional goals.  Being a mentor and a positive influence for the next generation of law enforcement officers has been a major priority for Rick during his career.  Rick’s love of the law enforcement profession and his motivation for wanting to help his fellow colleagues is what ultimately led to him founding Semper Veritas Police Training and Consulting, LLC.

After 32 years of service, Rick decided to retire from law enforcement and dedicate his energy to training the next generation of law enforcement officers on a full-time basis.  During his career, Rick was assigned to the Patrol Division as both a sworn officer and as a Field Training Officer.  Rick was also assigned as a detective to the following specialized units: Street Crimes Unit, Special Investigative Division (Vice and Narcotics), Property Crimes Unit, Violent Crimes Unit, and the Homicide Unit which is where he spent the majority of his career.  Rick was also an original member of the elite Lauderhill Police Department’s Specialized Weapons and Tactics (S.W.A.T. Team).  Rick also worked with numerous task forces during his career to include the FBI Violent Crimes and Fugitive Task Force, the United States Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force, and several of the DEA Task Forces.  In addition to these assignments, Rick has also been a Certified Police Training Instructor by the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission for more than 25 years.  For the last few years of his career, Rick was assigned to the Broward County Courthouse and the Governmental Center where his primary responsibilities were to provide dignitary protection to State, County and Local Elected Officials, visiting dignitaries, VIP guests to the County and members of the public who visited these buildings.  Upon his retirement from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, the Board of Broward County Commissioners presented Rick with the distinct honor of a Proclamation to recognize him for his more than three decades of loyal, dedicated and outstanding service to the citizens of Broward County and the South Florida Community at large. The Broward County Commissioners unanimously declared that November 14th, 2023, will forever be known as “Rick Sessions Day” in Broward County.

In 2009, with the assistance of the Deputy Chief Medical Examiner of Broward County, Dr. Darin Trelka, M.D., Ph.D., Rick conceived, developed, and launched a 40-hour training class called “Injury and Death Investigations”.  The class provides law enforcement officers with an overall view of how to thoroughly investigate all types of deaths, including homicides.  The class curriculum was reviewed and approved as a “salary incentive” class by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (F.D.L.E.) and the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission (C.J.S.T.C.)  During his more than 25 years as a Certified Instructor, Rick has provided advanced and specialized training to law enforcement officers in the areas of Homicide Investigations, In Custody Death Investigations, Infant Death Investigations, Officer Involved Shooting Investigations, Cold Case Homicide Investigations, Interviews and Interrogations, Criminal Law, Search Warrants, Digital Forensics, Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT), Social Media and Modern Technology, R.I.C.O. Investigations (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act), Internal Affairs Investigations, Courtroom Testimony and Surviving Cross Examination, Report Writing and the Marjory Stoneman Douglas (MSD) High School Shooting in Parkland, Florida to assist agencies with the lessons that were learned when it comes to investigating and prosecuting a mass shooting incident.  During his career as a Certified Instructor, more than 5,000 Federal, State and Local Law Enforcement Officers have attended and graduated from Rick’s training classes.

Prior to his law enforcement career, Rick served his country by joining the United States Coast Guard.  Rick served with honor and distinction during his 4 years on active duty and another 4 years in the reserves.  During his military service, Rick was deployed outside of the country on two separate occasions wherein he participated in joint military operations to advance the interests of the United States.  Rick was an integral member of numerous missions with the U.S. Coast Guard.  These missions included Narcotics Interdiction, Search and Rescue, Fisheries Enforcement, Alien Immigration, Recreational Boating Safety Boardings, Death Investigations and Fugitive Apprehension.  Although Rick genuinely enjoyed his time in the military, he knew that if he wanted to experience a wider variety of what the law enforcement profession had to offer, he would need to go to the civilian sector.  While assigned to Coast Guard Station Sand Key (Clearwater Beach), Rick attended and graduated from the Police Academy in Manatee County during his final year of active duty.

Education and Training have always been a major focal point of his career.  Rick earned his Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) with a Concentration in Human Resource Management from Lynn University and his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice Administration (BS) with a Concentration in Police Administration from Union Institute and University.  Rick was inducted into the International Honor Society of MBA Graduates, Sigma Beta Delta.  In 2016, the President of Lynn University, Dr. Kevin M. Ross, asked Rick to give the Commencement Speech for all students graduating that year with their Bachelors, Masters, and Doctorate Degrees.  This was one of the biggest honors of Rick’s life.  In front of almost 7,000 people, Rick spoke from his heart and delivered what has become known as the “Tomorrow is NOT a Guarantee” speech. In addition to his formal education, Rick has attended more than 150 law enforcement training classes across the country to advance his knowledge and experience.
