the Police Interview Room

Keys to Obtaining the Truth and Avoiding Suppression Issues

Course Description:

If you want to become a well-respected and productive member of the law enforcement community, especially if you want to become a successful detective/investigator, one of the most important skills that you need to develop is the ability to get people to “want” to talk to you.  This skill doesn’t just pertain to obtaining confessions from a suspect.  Developing the skill of getting people to “want” to talk to you also applies to victims, witnesses, and members of the general public.  This training course is specifically designed to enhance your confidence and increase your ability to obtain the truth and avoid suppression issues while conducting interviews with subjects in the Police Interview Room.    Participants will be provided with numerous “tools for your investigative toolbox” that will dramatically improve your skill set of getting subjects to “want” to talk to you.

The Lead Instructor for this informative and realistic 8-hour course is Rick Sessions.  During his 32-year law enforcement career in Broward County, Florida, Rick spent the majority of his time assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division, primarily the Homicide Unit.  He was well-known for his ability to get suspects, even hardened multi-time convicted felons that had been “through the system” many times, to open up and have a conversation that would often ultimately lead to a detailed confession.  Rick has personally conducted several hundred interviews of suspects on very serious cases, including many death penalty cases, wherein he has obtained confessions that survived the scrutiny of the judicial system.  In addition to his own extensive personal experience inside of the Police Interview Room obtaining statements from subjects, Rick has also spent many years studying and teaching the art of Interviews and Interrogations.

During this training course, Rick will discuss the various methodologies, philosophies, and techniques that have been developed and implemented through the years, along with the extensive Case Law associated with the subject of police interrogations.  Rick will also discuss the advantages of both verbal and non-verbal communication skills and how to utilize them when inside of the Police Interview Room.  Participants who attend this training course will benefit greatly from the many years of real-world experience and extensive research that Rick has obtained and conducted.  As a result of those many years of real-world experience and extensive research on police interrogations, Rick is able to provide the participants in this class with numerous techniques and strategies that he has learned and developed over many years.  These techniques and strategies will help to maximize your chances of getting a subject to “want” to have a conversation with you when you are inside of the Police Interview Room.  Remember, the information that a subject provides during an interview, even if it is later proven to be untruthful, can still have a major impact on your investigation.  However, that information will never be obtained and potentially used as crucial evidence in your case if you are unable to accomplish your original goal of getting the subject to “want” to talk to you.

This course is designed for Law Enforcement Officers who want to improve their performance in the Police Interview Room and for Prosecutors who evaluate statements and confessions.  During this course, Rick will discuss and explain some of the primary Case Law applicable to law enforcement officers conducting Interviews and Interrogations, including personal experiences from some of his own cases.  If you struggle as a law enforcement officer with getting people to “want” to talk to you, especially with getting suspects to want to talk to you, this is the course for you.  If you walk into an interview room with a suspect and you are nervous because you don’t really have a specific plan of action, this is the course for you.  If you are an experienced detective/investigator and you want to increase the percentage of cases where you obtain a confession and you want to make sure that it will hold up in court, this is the course for you.  Developing excellent interpersonal skills will not only help you in the Police Interview Room and out on the streets when interacting with the general public, but it will also have a profound impact on improving your relationships with your fellow colleagues and even with your personal relationships.

Course Objectives:

At the conclusion of this one-day training course, participants will have an increased amount of confidence on conducting interviews and interrogations, a strategic plan once they enter into the Police Interview Room, and a strong working knowledge of the current Case Law associated with obtaining statements from subjects.  Participants of this training course will be presented with real-life examples of law enforcement officers conducting interviews inside of a Police Interview Room.  Some of the cases that are discussed, law enforcement officers did an outstanding job during the interview.  In other cases that are discussed, there were major legal and ethical issues that arose from the activities of law enforcement officers.  At Semper Veritas Police Training and Consulting, we strongly believe that our participants can learn a tremendous amount from both the good examples of how interviews should be conducted and also from what “Not to do” because of potential policy violations, suppression issues, or worse.
